Facebook is deepening its relationship with eCommerce platform Shopify by allowing users to sell products directly to consumers via the Messenger app. The new feature means, aside from notifying customers about orders and responding to queries, Shopify retailers can turn conversations into product sales.

This is the latest move by Facebook to establish itself as a retail platform that connects brands to consumers on a one-to-one basis. So let’s take a closer look at what this new feature is all about.


Facebook and Shopify get cosy

The ‘Messenger channel’ is a free add-on for Shopify users and you can find more information about it here. The add-on itself has been around for a while, allowing you to update customers about their order status and delivery info. You can also respond to customer queries inside Messenger, creating a stronger bond between your brand and individual customers.

Facebook also allows you to sell products directly from pages on the network – aka: Shopify Facebook Stores.

These features have been gradually rolling out for more than a year and Facebook clearly isn’t done yet.


A new way to connect with consumers

The Facebook-Shopify relationship is even more intimate now that store owners can sell products directly in Messenger chats. Aside from the uses we mentioned above, the Messenger channel now let’s customers browse your products and buy from within the app – creating a personalised shopping experience with real-time feedback from your brand.
